Mt. Rushmore bound!

Well, it's official....I owe Matthew a trip to Mt. Rushmore!

Last August, Matthew told me he wanted to get 300 Accelerated Reader points in 2nd grade. I told him this was quite a lofty goal, as he would have to read around 500 books and take tests on them. He was adamant about it and asked me if I would take him to Mt. Rushmore it he met the goal. It has been Matthew's dream for a LONG time to visit this famous landmark. He has quite the little obsession with all things American history.

Matthew's teacher called me yesterday to inform me that Matthew finished his goal! It was extremely important to him to complete his goal on Bryon's birthday.

Bryon and I are taking the kids on a long trip in July, so Bryon was unable to take the time off for this trip. He suggested that Matthew and I fly there one weekend. Now, Matthew is also is desperately wanting to add more states to his "been there" column, so we decided that driving it would be better. Matthew invited Thomas on the trip, and I invited Lauren for some company! I cannot wait to spend 5 days straight with my sister and sons. (ME and James are going to have to sit this one out.)

We will leave the week school gets out and add New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, (possibly Montana if the boys are super good) South Dakota, and Nebraska to their "been there" list. Just a few more weeks!

I'm glad Cassidy didn't ask for a trip! All I have to do is take her to Amy's Ice Cream for reaching 300.

Meredith, as much as I like to travel, he didn't need to twist my arm at all to agree!

I haven't been to Mt. Rushmore/Devil's Tower/Chimney Rock since I was 10, so I am excited to get to experience again with my own kids.

BTW- He is already thinking of next year and wants a trip to "ancient Greece" if he gets 400 points! I am thinking this one is a "no".

I think 300 AR points is an AMAZING achievement for a 2nd grader! Especially one as active as he is! Way to go Matthew!
I too have had to "pay up" when my kids met what I thought was an unlikely goal. But what a great sibling trip! You and lauren will have so much fun together... and the boys too. :) Looking forward to hearing all about it this summer after you get back.

How cool....I've never been there either, so I can imagine it's exciting. I love how he asked for ancient Greece for next year! Smart boy!

Wow! That is so cool! He will remember that forever! As a reading specialist, it is so encouraging to hear that parents are fostering a love for reading at a early age! Reading does bring rewards, and learning that young will follow him forever! GO MATTHEW GO!

How fun! You will have to tell me about it when you get back. That is one of our planned camping trecks when Ethan gets a little older.
Congratulations Matthew! You ROCK!
