Last night around 11 p.m., Bryon and I heard a bunch of screaming girls outside. Of course, my first thought was, "If another teenage girl plowed into our mailbox....."
Well, actually, a bunch of teenage girls saw this little guy in front of our house heading our direction. They knew we had little kids and got scared that it would get in our yard, so they backed up and ran over it! This picture was taken just a few feet from my curb.
This one looks identical to the one that was below my feet last month. I got the type of snake wrong. It is actually a rat snake. Animal control says they aren't poisonous but highly aggressive. You won't die from a bite but you are likely to get bitten by them! Yuck!
I am hoping that this one was my friend from earlier and not part of a large family of rat snakes that call my yard home!

I have vivid memories of my brother barefoot at 5 years of age jumping from our ledge in the backyard (when we lived in Okla) and landing on a rat snake that was just that size. He thought it was cool and my mom literally almost went into cardiac arrest! She yelled for a teenage boy who hopped the fence and killed it for her.
Snakes are just plain awful -- poisonous or not, big or small...I don't like any of them! I am adding iguanas now to my list of reptiles I don't like either. The creeps...they all give me the creeps!
We live on Burnet Bay near the Houston Ship Channel. Chad was jogging a few months ago and a woman pulled over and told him to be careful -- she had just seen a water moccasin crossing the street a block or so back. We also have friends on our street who had a copperhead in their garage once. And we have the rare alligator sighting. One was hauled away at the edge of our neighborhood a couple of weeks ago. I'm all about getting back to nature... but not THAT much.
Again, my motto: Only good snake is a dead snake! RIP Snakey! I am glad he/she is gone. I hope if there is a family of them, they got the message and high tailed it out of your yard!
I think those teenage girls are so sweet to kill the snake for you! There are sweet kids in this world.
I hate HATE snakes...
I now have the creeps!! I just cannot stand the thought of a snake. I am so glad that it is dead and will be praying it is the only one anywhere near you.
Thanks to this blog, I had a dream last night that a group I was with was being attacked by a snake that looked more like an alligator.
