Zumbatomic!

Thomas was so excited to hear that my friend, Erica, would teach a Zumba class for kids this semester! Mary Beth has ballet at the same time, and Matthew was overbooked, so we let Thomas have Zumba all to himself. He loved every minute of it. This boy LOVES to dance! Yesterday was the parent viewing party. Thomas and friends got to show off their zumba numbers to the parents. It was so much fun watching him dance!

2nd Grade Poetry Recital

Thomas's 2nd grade Poetry Recital happened last Friday. I always love this event, and thought all the kids were so entertaining! Matthew was in charge of videoing, and it seems he didn't have a steady hand on Friday. I apologize! Here is Thomas's two poems.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Mr. Stein- This one is a bit hard to hear. The kids are excited that their teacher isn't there, but then freak out when they learn that Frankenstein is their substitute!

Get In The Game

Last night was Matthew's 4th grade program. It was adorable! Matthew played Mr. Baxter, the school janitor. When the kids at school are fearful of their new gym teacher, Mr. Baxter reassures the kids, then at the end, reveals that he is, in fact, the new gym teacher. Matthew did a great job, and I always love watching him perform! There are a few pictures, and at the end is one of Matthew's solos in the program. We had a wonderful evening capped off by a great baseball game after the program. What a great way for Matthew to spend his half birthday!

These are Matthew's two best friends in our neighborhood. All the moms were assigned the responsibility of buying bowling shirts. Without knowing it, we all ordered the same ones! Same color and website. Great buddies since kindergarten! Mary Beth had a BLAST! ;) We were so happy Aunt Lauren and James came to cheer on Matthew!

Saturday's baseball game

We had a unique baseball experience on Saturday. Instead of playing on our Little League fields, Matthew's team got to play at the Little League headquarters in Waco. Several teams from around the area came out to play and to benefit the Shriner's hospital.

The event was televised and many area sportscasters were in attendance. The kids enjoyed lining up at the 1st and 3rd base lines for the National Anthem and having a more "real" baseball experience. The game was neck and neck for the duration of the game, but in the end, we lost by 1 run.

Professional sports photographers were there to take pictures of the kids. I love the first two pictures. They were immediately before and after Matthew smacked the ball into the outfield for a base hit! We enjoyed the day immensely and were happy to hear that the Shriner's received $5000 for their hospital.

A day of celebrations.

Last Saturday was meant for celebrating! First, Mary Beth, Thomas, and I headed to Frisco to celebrate my niece, Lydia's, first birthday. Matthew had games and practices, so Bryon and Matthew stayed home. My SIL decorated their house adorably with strawberries everywhere. We enjoyed a yummy lunch and lots of fun family time.

James and Mary Beth "helping."

Mary Beth trying to keep the sun off of Lydia.

Then, after a few hours, we headed home. Saturday night, I helped host a party for our dear friends, the Lamms. I made 5 desserts the night before for the event! Perry Lamm had suffered terribly from cancer last year (his second bout), and the night was meant to celebrate him being cancer free. Unfortunately, at the party, Perry told us the news that a 3 month check up the day before revealed more spots on his lungs. He is going to have to go through chemo again. This was a terrible process last year, and he lost 70 pounds from the grueling treatment. It put a damper on our celebration, but we love the Lamm family, and we all felt good just showing their family how much we love them. If you could keep that family in your prayers, I am sure they would appreciate it!

Kindergarten Track and Roof Day

Mary Beth had her kindergarten Track Day and Roof Day last Friday. This is such a cute event filled with silly relays and snow cones. After their track day, the principal of our school stays on the roof the entire day and sprays the kids with hoses and the kids get water balloons. It is a celebration of the end of the year that the kids look forward to so much!

I wasn't able to stay for Roof Day, but my friend, Maria, took pictures of our best buddy little girls enjoying the life out of Roof Day!

Oh, my...

Throughout Matthew's life, I have often walked into a room and found him getting into mischief.
Why should today be any different?
"Matthew, what are you doing?"
"I am trying to look like Josh Beckett."
"Who is that?"
"The pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He has a thin goatee like I am going to have one day."
(I guess Matthew has yet to hear my strict "no thin goatee policy".)
"Matthew, you have no facial hair. I don't think shaving will help!"
"Well, I am going to practice. I'll get a beard when I hit puberty which I can't WAIT FOR!"

I have a feeling my life is about to get very interesting.

Matthew's Elementary Experience

This month, Matthew will complete his 5th and final year of elementary school. It has been an absolute joy to watch him grow these past 5 years! I am so excited for him to move on to intermediate school next year, but I want to write a blog about my memories of his elementary school experience.

Some of these are funny stories and some are accomplishments. I don't want this to come across as bragging, but since the advent of Facebook, I think only 2 or 3 people read this thing anymore and I am wanting to document them in our family's journal.

*The first day of kindergarten, I was talking to the librarian, and Matthew said to me in his authoritative voice, "Hurry up, Mom! I have business I need to get to!"

*I remember seeing many moms cry on the first day, but I was so happy that Matthew was in school. This child was born to be in school and I was more happy for him than sad for me.

*Being very nervous about not knowing Matthew's teacher, but being pleasantly surprised to find that she was a sorority sister of mine at Baylor! I love Matthew's kindergarten teacher and I was so happy that she kept me informed of funny Matthew stories.

*Matthew making a dear friend in kindergarten who asked Matthew to come play at his house that spring. When I dropped Matthew off, I drove through his friend's neighborhood, not having seen it since only a few houses were built there, and fell in love with the neighborhood. Two months later, we bought a house in that neighborhood!

*In first grade, Matthew's teacher asked the class to name a word that started with a "q". Matthew shot up his hand and said, "quill!" When the class did not know what this word meant, Matthew looked at his teacher and said, "Doesn't anyone around here care about American history?"

*Matthew crying in first grade on Columbus Day because he couldn't go to school that day.

*He decided in first grade that he wanted to be a gastroenterologist. This was the longest doctor name he could think of. One of his journal entries was about how gastroenterologists "work with your colon...you know, the thing that helps you poop?"

*Matthew had a new teacher in 2nd grade who we had heard nothing about. After meeting that beautiful teacher with long blonde hair, it was time to go home. Matthew got into the car and said, "I have a feeling I am going to love 2nd grade!" I asked why and he said, "Three things...she's young, she's good looking, and she's single!" This teacher ranks as one of my favorites for Matthew. We enjoy a great relationship to this day. Coincidentally, she was also a sorority sister of mine at Baylor, although she was there 8 years after me!

*In 2nd grade, Matthew asked me if I would take him to Mt. Rushmore if he read for 300 A.R. points. I agreed thinking that he wouldn't do it. He ended the year with 330 and we went to Mt. Rushmore three days after school got out.

*Having to explain to Matthew's kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade teachers that we were not a one dimensional family after finding that nearly every entry in each of his journals was sports related. One of my favorites was from 2nd grade when Matthew blamed Jessica Simpson for Tony Romo's poor performance in the playoffs!

*Matthew getting perfect attendance in 1st and 2nd grade. He did not miss a day for being sick after getting chicken pox in kindergarten!

*Matthew narrowly missed getting into the Gifted and Talented program at our school in kindergarten and 1st grade. He claimed that the testing for it was too boring. Wouldn't you know that he got into the program in 2nd grade...just two months after his kindergarten brother got in? Nothing like a little brother competition for motivation! ;)

*At the beginning of third grade, Matthew was not thrilled with the teacher he had been given. She was very loud, strick, and many of the kids were fearful of her. She ended up being one of Matthew's favorite memories of elementary school as she told the best stories about history. To this day, Matthew quotes Mrs. F, and she has told me that if she had had a son, she would have loved one just like Matthew.

*Matthew getting one of the 2 male leads in the 3rd grade musical. The music teacher couldn't decide if Matthew should be Santa Claus or Dr. Brainpain. She finally decided that Matthew just looked like a Dr. Brainpain!

*Matthew has loved his homeroom teacher this year and loves that she drives a truck and is a sports fanatic.

*Matthew made straight A's his entire time in elementary school except one B in the middle of this year. He confided to his teacher and me his fear that this might hurt his chances of getting into Baylor. Bryon and I have never had to motivate Matthew to do well in school and he expects a lot out of himself.

*The daily goings on at recess. This was always his favorite thing to talk about after school. Who was picked for what team and the sport of the day. Matthew especially loves kickball and always gets picked early on because of his strong leg! ;)

*The love and support we got from his teachers and friends after Matthew was attacked earlier this year.

*Matthew's deck tennis team beating the rest of the entire 4th grade class, which meant that his team got to play the teachers/principals in the championship. They ended up beating the teachers. This was Matthew's favorite memory of the year!

*Getting to go on great field trips to Round Rock's Innerspace Caverns, Killeen's Planetarium, Grapevine's Ice Exhibit and Rainforest Cafe', the state Capitol, as well as the Waterpark at the end of this month.

*Getting one of the lead roles in the 4th grade musical that will happen next week (he plays a bowling instructor). Matthew loves drama and singing on stage!

*Being proud of Matthew when we heard in the middle of the year that he tested on a 9th grade level in reading.

*Matthew has had the same backpack since 1st grade. He claims it's the best, so why mess with perfection?

*It was always very important to Matthew that I be his room mother. I was every year. Well, technically, I was the 4th grade room mom coordinator this year, so I was room mom by default!

So many good memories of experiences had, things learned, and friendships made!

Emotional

Well, here we are in May. May is usually a pretty emotional month for me. I think a lot of it has to do with just being worn out from activities, but lots of changes go on in May. By the time we are in a great rhythm with our classes and teachers, it is time to shut it down. This May in particular with be very hard. Here are a few reasons why:

*My sweet baby boy, who 5 years ago bounded into school as excited as I have ever seen him, will be walking out of elementary school for the last time. The fastest 5 years of my life.

*My 2nd grader has had the best year of his life. Amazing teacher, great friends in his class. I wish we could take it all with us to 3rd grade. I love 2nd grade and feel like it is the last little kid grade before the TAKS testing starts in 3rd.

*My baby girl will be finished with kindergarten. I have written on this blog so many time about how much I adore this age. And the icing on the cake was that Mary Beth had the sweetest kindergarten teacher whom I adore. I will miss Mrs. B dearly.

*I will never have another kindergartner. **sigh**

*I will never have all three of my children under one roof in school again.

*Matthew and Mary Beth will never be in the same school ever again.

*Matthew and Thomas will not be together again until Matthew is a junior in high school!

I am sure I will get used to the new arrangement. Living and dying by the complicated carpools. Traveling to different campuses. Not knowing Matthew's teachers as well as I have know the past 7 teachers. Not having rest times, teddy bear picnics, etc for kindergarten. But today, it makes me a little sad.

I have also been working on my blog books and organizing pictures. It is amazing to me how much more grown up the kids are looking these days. It is also amazing to look at a picture and forget which year it was taken. Where have the years gone? Why is it hard to look at a picture and not know exactly how old Thomas was in that picture when I had memorized every freckle on his face and ringlet in his hair? If these past 10 years have gone so quickly, what about the next 10?

Ok, I need to stop!

I can see clearly now, the glasses are gone!

Matthew, age 4

We got very exciting news on Friday! But first, a little background...

When Matthew was 4, he was diagnosed with a lazy eye. Not the kind that makes the eye wander, but his right eye muscle was weaker than his left. This made his brain only take information from the good eye and neglect information from his bad eye. If this was to go unchecked, his brain would stop taking information from his bad eye and no amount of correction would be able to repair it.

Matthew had to wear an eye patch for a few torturous months and glasses. From day one, Matthew has hated wearing glasses. Hated them. Haaaaaated them. Since he had a perfectly good eye, the glasses didn't transform his vision from blurry to clear. They were just a nuisance to him. For the first several years of wearing his glasses, we went through about 4 pairs a year. They would get irreparably scratched, bent, broken, lost, you name it.

A classic example of Matthew getting bent out of shape!

Here is an excerpt from a blog a few years ago. It has always been Bryon's job to take Matthew's glasses to be repaired, but Lauren and I were heading to the mall, and I grabbed Matthew's glasses to be bent back into shape:

"The saleslady, who I have never seen before, walked over and looked at the glasses that had been unsealed and cracked. She pondered them for a minute and said, "This is a really strange question, but do these glasses, by chance, belong to Matthew -------?" Lauren and I busted out laughing! Then the saleslady laughed and said, "I have seen this pair of glasses a lot!" Yes, we take the free repair promise very seriously!"

The past year or two, Matthew has been able to keep glasses longer, but I was constantly on him to wear them. He had been begging for months to get contacts, so I finally made the appointment to see about doing that. I was getting tired of the hounding and still fearful that there would be damage to his brain. We know a girl whose vision was not corrected and can no longer be corrected because of this issue.

After the eye exam, our optometrist declared that Matthew's weak eye, which had been getting stronger each year, was finally to the point where he no longer needed to wear glasses! It had improved from 20/50 to 20/25. He also said that Matthew was old enough now to not have to worry about his brain shutting off information from the weaker eye. Matthew raced out of the clinic jumping and hollering!

We will still go in for appointments, as the doctor for sees Matthew's strong eye getting near sighted as he gets older, but for now, we are relishing life not wearing/hounding to wear glasses.

Nice single

Bryon got me a Flip video for Christmas, and my mother has been borrowing it for several months. I am just now starting to use it, and I love it! Here is a clip of Matthew's great base hit this morning. It went all the way to the wall!

P.S.- When we were growing up, we used to always make fun of my Mom saying, "Get it! Get it! Get it! Get it!" When Michael was playing. This has now come back to haunt me. Matthew keeps going around the house saying, "Wooooo, Matthew!" since he listened to me on this video! ;)
