It is now close to midnight. I am usually in LaLa Land at 10:30 so it is really late for me! I started reading Marley and Me yesterday and couldn't put it down.
I knew what was coming. I knew it.
No best selling, self-respecting, book about a dog ends before the dog's life does. Still, I continued. Not to spoil the ending, but Marley dies. Don't worry, he was 13 and it was his time, but nothing chokes me up more than animal stories. Now I can't sleep because I have been crying. Why couldn't I have waited to finish it until tomorrow?
Had a thought.

I reached a point when I was in about the 4th grade where I quit reading books about animals because something awful always seemed to happen to them. I personally think "The Yearling" and "Old Yeller" were created for the sole purpose of causing nervous breakdowns in children.
Yes, Deana-
My third grade teacher read us "Where The Red Fern Grows". At the end of the book, all the other children were quiet as they heard Dan and Little Ann died. I was sobbing. So embarassing!
I really should stop reading them altogether and I will have to just say no when the movie comes out!
Have you seen the movie, My Dog Skip? It is a super sad tearjerker movie about a boy and his dog.
When I want a good cry, I watch that...other than that, it sits on our shelf of DVDs! Too sad...
I remember hearing our teacher read Where the Red Fern Grows to us when we were in 5th grade -- our entire class was crying (including the teacher!), so you would have been in good company.
Yes, Kristen, I did watch My Dog Skip and cried like a baby. I don't understand why I can watch movies about people dying without too much emotion, but show me an elderly, incontinent, smelly dog who needs to be put to sleep and pass me the Kleenex!
I have to admit, I'm not much of an animal lover. I do have a vivid memory, though, of asking my mom for two coon hounds in 4th grade after my teacher had read "Where the Red Fern Grows" to us.
We never got the coon hounds, but when I was in high school we got two labs, one black, one yellow that looked almost exactly like your two labs. They were SO destructive!! They CHEWED a hole through my parents garage door! We ended up giving the yellow one (the more hyper of the two) to one of my dad's friends and kept the black one. After Duke (yellow) was gone, Raider (black) became THE BEST dog!
I'll cry every time over a dog book or a book about kids. If you make it a book about dogs AND kids. Forget about it. I'm a gonner!
I remember when Titanic came out reading about some of the scenes that were cut. You know the rich peoples' dogs that were shown boarding the ship at the beginning? There were scenes toward the end showing those dogs drowining. When test audiences were shown those scenes during the film's editing, they received such a strong negative reaction that the scenes were cut. You're not alone, Elizabeth, many people would rather watch a person die than an animal.
Elizabeth,
Do you really think that dogs have great value than humans??? I never knew you were that cold! =)
Yeah, my new philosophy is "Down with humans! Up with animals!" I hope they rule the world someday.
