I absolutely love to read. It ranks right there with scrapbooking and cooking as my favorite pastime. I finally joined a book club that one of my good friends is a part of last month. Our first book was The Kite Runner. I can say that I appreciated it more than I loved it. It was an easy read and it really opened my eyes to the plight of those living in the Middle East. It made me think that people living there were suffering human beings and not all American-hating terrorists. I would recommend it if you are in the mood for something deeper than Mary Higgins Clark but not as difficult as Faulkner.
As you can see from the right hand margin, I am currently reading Julie and Julia. I hate it. I am about 1/4 of the way through and am thinking of abandoning it. What I had read about it was that it was based on a blogger who went through the entire Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child. Sounds interesting to a reader who love to cook, right?
Actually, the author loves to use the "s" and "f" words constantly and compares many of the cooking methods to what I consider inappropriate subjects. I keep skimming through trying to find chapters where she actually talks about cooking. Still having trouble with that one! The author was on the Martha show this week and it was very obvious that Martha didn't like her. She never laughed at her jokes and hardly looked at her. I DEFINITELY DON'T RECOMMEND IT!
Now, I am going to either finish the last few stories in the Chronicles of Narnia, read my next Rebus book, by Ian Rankin, read Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas (given to me by a friend) or Gilead, my next book for book club. I will keep you posted!
Question: Does anyone have a book that they highly recommend? One that they couldn't put down? It doesn't have to be something you recently read. If I had to choose my favorite books that I have read in the past 10 years, I would say Redeeming Love and The Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers. I couldn't recommend them more highly!
Had a thought.

Thank you, Meekaa. I love anything by Beth Moore and my husband has "The Road Less Traveled". I might have to pick it up!
I love to read, too. I usually try to read "light" books, though. I tend to stick to Nicholas Sparks type books. I really loved Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas and I also loved James Patterson's other similar type book- Sam's Letters to Jennifer. Get the kleenex out for both of these, though!
That is so interesting...I clicked on your link of "Julie and Julia" and read just a little of the excerpt and didn't like it either. I figured you would be making a comment about it soon. Great minds think alike, I guess! :)

Oh...about books...I don't have much imput. I seem to be more into Runny Babbit/Give a Pig a Pancake/Very Hungry Caterpillar, etc.
Eugenia Price's books about coastal Georgia and South Carolina before, during, and after the Civil War. They would be considered Historical Fiction though almost all of the characters, places, and events are not fiction at all.
Not what I would call a "deep" read but certainly not the "trashy" romance usually set during that time period. Very thoroughly researched and informative.
I am glad you have time carved out to read...I haven't re-found mine yet!!
She used the "saute" and "fry" words? What is this world coming to??
I'm in the middle of Garrison Keillor's "Good Poems for Hard Times." He put out another poetry book several years ago -- the one I'm reading is the new one. It's not his poetry -- it's a compilation of poems he likes. Good stuff!

I know you read to your kids--even though my kids can and do read on their own, it is one of my greatest joys to read to them. Matthewouiaiouuu (bless him) is old enough to have the "Chronicles of Narnia" read to him. My daughter was his age when I read it aloud and she was captivated. Also, my kids LOVED "Mountain Born" by Elizabeth Yates. It is very easy to read aloud and it is such a beautiful story I plan to read it to my kids again soon. Currently I am reading "Stowaway" to them by Karen Hesse.
i was going to say redeeming love!!! i just read it and LOVED it!!!! my favorite so far.
I love Jennifer Weiner's books... though Good in Bed is quite risque it's VERY good and In Her Shoes is even better. I can't remember if there is a third one out or not. Also, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series are good too, even if they are in the juvenile section!
My absolute favorite series of classics are the Anne books and Little Women, Men, Eight Cousins...
Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas is a TEAR JERKER... and sooo good!!
The Tin Boom's story is fantastic, as is Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Flowers for Algernon.
Can you tell I wanted to be an reading teacher?
I really enjoy Karen Kingsbury--her redemption series is on my list for SOON!
How do you have time to read with 3 little ones?
JB-
I have to find time to read. It is something important to me, and people generally find time to do the things they love to do!
I read before I go to bed, on Sunday afternoons, or when Bryon is working on a case at night.
Oh my. I just read over my comment... an reading teacher??? But obviously not an English teacher!!! Doh.
I have read Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas and it's good.
I really liked "The Yada Yada Prayer Group" and "The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Down." There is a 3rd one, "The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Real" that I haven't read yet.
I also really enjoy Lori Wick. She has a few series that are all Christian fiction. They're very light reading. The "Sisterchick" series by Robin Jones Gunn is pretty good and very light.
Adriana Trigiani has a series with "Big Stone Gap," "Big Cherry Holler," and "Milk Glass Moon." Those are pretty good.
The "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" trilogy is very good although the 3rd book was not as good as the first two.
I, too, hate to have to "ignore" the "f" word while reading. Sometimes I keep reading and try to ignore it, but if it happens too frequently, I just stop reading it. That and alot of "raunchy" references make me feel guilty and turn me off from the book. I've taken many books back to the library without reading them completely through. Don't get me wrong, I'm no saint, but some are just too bad to read.
I DEFINITELY take the time to read. I love it!!!!!
