I plan to write about our holiday season soon, but I wanted to share with you a project that I completed that I am proud of.
Knitting has been a hobby of at least 5 generations of women in my family. My great great grandmother, Elizabeth Ann, who I am named after, and who moved to America from England, taught my great grandmother, who taught my grandmother (whose husband called her Madame DeFarge, the knitter in A Tale of Two Cities), who taught my mother (and aunts), who taught me. Mom taught me when I was in 6th grade, but I just recently took it up again. My grandmother knitted my Christmas stocking before she passed away when I was a baby, and my aunts have taken over the responsibility of knitting Christmas stockings for all the newest members of our family.
I just completed my first scarf. I loved making the scarf, and am on to my next project! What a great hobby and a neat family tradition!

Looks like a successful first project! My mother-in-law knits and I'm asking her to teach me this year -- I love that she makes gifts for the family to hand down to new generations. What's next on your knitting agenda?
Kathryn, I just started an Irish Hiking Scarf. It's for my husband. The project is a step up in difficulty since there are cables (twisty pattern) in it. I haven't done a project that isn't just straight knit/purl.
That is neat about your mother in law. Mary Beth still plays with the blanket that my grandmother knitted for me when I was a baby!
Here is the scarf I am doing. I am using a mohair like wool that is dark brown and blue so it is more manly! ;)

Google reader is killing my blog commenting. :) I am still reading! I learned to knit about 5 years ago. Greg's mom taught me and I even took a class after that. But I never got past hats and scarves. And you can only have so many of those in Alabama that get used! LOL! Can't wait to see your projects. It's a really fun hobby and you may have inspired me to pick it back up. I have tons of yarn from when I was eager to practice that I need to use! :)
Ok, you must teach me now! Love it! :)
It looks great Elizabeth. I love to knit and always have something going. I usually make small baby blankets for the NICU with yarn i have left over. Make different ones for different holidays. Grammy would be proud of your work.
GOOD JOB!!! That's a beautiful first project! It looks like you've done it forever. I would LOVE to learn, but really need hands on help and not just reading instructions out of a book. Maybe I'll pick it up now, thanks!! ; )
Panda Mom, I had a hard time with the books. My mom is a great teacher! There is a great place in Ft. Worth called Jenning Street Yarns that has a great reputation and they teach classes. I think I am going to try to come up at some point to do that!
